In the mid-Thirties, the German State Railroad was aspiring to establish a network of fast FD and D express trains. According to the planners' ideas, the existing locomotives were no longer sufficient. The classes 01 and 03 could only do a maximum speed of 130 km/h / 81 mph. This was too little. In addition, there were no power reserves. Consequently, the industry was commissioned to design a new express locomotive, but also due to good results with streamlined locomotives, the class 01.10. The class 05 was already pointing the way in the right direction, also because it had three-cylinder running gear.

In short, under the streamlining of this new locomotive was no more than a class 01, however equipped with a third cylinder running gear. Fifty-five units were built. World War II prevented more production. After the end of the war, there were still 54 locomotives left, most in miserable condition. They were not retired, since they did not represent in any way a splinter class with this quantity. Starting in 1949, they went through a main overhaul. In the process, all the units lost their streamlining. The main boiler was given normal sheet metal. The very flat domes on the top of the boiler were striking, whose dimensions were once adapted to the streamlining. Another clearly recognizable feature was the feedwater heater mounted crosswise above the smoke box door. This placement led to the smoke box door having to be trimmed at the top. The visual features mentioned were typical for all de-streamlined class 01.10 locomotives. Since various workshops were involved with these units, sometimes there were small details not handled in a standard manner so that individual locomotives differed in these various small features. In the mid-Fifties, the class 01.10 was for several years the ultimate express locomotive able to pull heavy D-Zug express trains too.

The new German Federal Railroad on the other hand was not so fortunate with the boilers. They were constructed of type St 47 k steel and quickly caused problems in harsh everyday conditions. It was a matter of time until these class 01.10 units were give new welded high-performance boilers. This measure changed their appearance to a new one, and the striking face with the feedwater heater disappeared. These locomotives with new boilers were hard at work until the mid-Seventies.

Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) class 01.10 express train steam locomotive with an older design boiler and a type 2´3 T38 coal tender. Black/red basic paint scheme. Version without streamlining. Striking crosswise mounted feedwater heater on the smoke box. Dual headlights. Witte smoke deflectors and inductive magnet on one side. The locomotive looks as it did around 1950.

Model: The locomotive has an mfx+ digital decoder and extensive sound functions. It also has controlled, high-efficiency propulsion with a flywheel, mounted in the boiler. 3 axles powered. Traction tires. The locomotive and tender are constructed mostly of metal. The locomotive has a factory-installed smoke unit, with speed-dependent dynamic smoke exhaust. Dual headlights, which change over with the direction of travel, will work in conventional operation and can be controlled digitally. The cab lighting, firebox flickering, and running gear lights can be controlled separately in digital operation. Maintenance-free, warm white and red LEDs are used for the lighting. There is a close coupling with a guide mechanism between the locomotive and tender. There is a close coupler with an NEM pocket and a guide mechanism on the tender. The buffer height on the locomotive and tender adheres to the NEM. The minimum radius for operation is 360 mm / 14-3/16. Piston rod protection sleeves and brake hoses are included. Length over the buffers 27.7 cm / 10-7/8.
